This is the quilt I have been working on recently. It is essentially a utility quilt as I pieced it together with bits and pieces of my grandmothers leftover fabrics. The quilt top itself was put together years and years ago, but I've only been hand quilting it for just over a month now.

It has some fabrics in it with a very tight weave (the white fabric especially) and so it has felt like I'm wrestling with a bear sometimes. I will probably never attempt to hand quilt another quilt with this type of fabric, but I am glad I made the effort for this one as hand quilting was my grandmothers specialty.

I'm finally, finally quilting clear out to the edges and it actually feels like I'm gaining ground. Maybe it will actually be finished some day soon!

ReplyDeleteDoesn't look like a utility quilt to me. It's beautiful. Love all those vintage fabrics in blues, greens and purples. Do you find you quilt faster when you get close to the finish? I do. ; c )

ReplyDeleteI do love this quilt even though it hasn't been fun to quilt and know it will always have a special place among my favorites! And yes Maureen, I do quilt faster when I can see the end in sight.:)

Oh yes indeed - utility quilts can be simply gorgeous! As yours is. I use a wooden hoop to quilt - it's fairly squared off, but I do lose a little bit of quilting space with the rounded corners. I'm intrigued by yours - where did you get it?
ReplyDeleteThis particular hoop was given to me by a good friend years ago but I've bought a (smaller) similar hoop from JoAnne Fabrics in the last year. It was hard to get used to at first, but now it's difficult to go back to a rounded hoop because of what you said about the corners.:)

I can sympathize with the quilting on too tight fabric. I did a few star blocks on Moda 200 ct. muslin---major brain blip! Unfortunately, I'm doing some of my best hand quilting on it. Fortunately, it's a small quilt, only 6 blocks. Hopefully I won't forget this lesson, because I really do know better!
